We’re all in this economic struggle together. While I'm now a Republican, I must confess I voted for Kennedy and L.B.J., marched in protests with Russ Feingold, and was an active O.P.I.E.U.#39 (Organization of Professional International Employee Union) member for most of my career. My primary responsibility during the 70's and early 80's was to organize credit unions throughout the U.S. I'd fly into State Credit Union League headquarters Sunday night and travel their State with their Directors of Field Services and Education organizing credit unions during the day and conducting Board and Committee training workshops at night. FYI, the Door County Community Credit Union (now merged into Pioneer Credit Union ) was organized at our kitchen table in Egg Harbor and run the first six months out of the trunk of my '65 Chevy. I've been a Retired Wisconsin Educators Association member and have taught business development courses for over 40 years. I'm convinced that those who support the recall of Scott Walker are at best misguided and at worse totally ignoring Wisconsin is broke and taxpayers have been milked dry.

Why it's good business to do business in Wisconsin

Please Note: Wisconsin is working hard to reduce the cost of doing business here and subsequently your cost of vacationing at our cottage. I encourage you to visit www.reforms.wi.gov and www.itsworkingwisconsin.com to assess our progress. Click here for a short list of our successes so far.

We pledge to your pocketbook: We'll continue our efforts to keep government out of our business and our rates within your budget. We understand, no matter how tough it is doing business in Wisconsin, our customers from Illinois have it far worse. If you doubt it, Click here. In fairness to our guests from Illinois, we must concede it took over-the-top collective bargaining to fold Chrysler in Rockford, it took that plus Obama's bailouts to drive GM out of Janesville. If you think I'm harsh, read the unbiased opinions of government bailouts in the automobile industry. While bankruptcy would have been tougher, in the long run infusing capital after bankruptcy proceedings played out would have saved not only taxpayers billions and the plants in Rockford and Janesville but dealerships across the country from being forced to close. For example, thanks to government intervention and mishandling of bailouts one of the oldest dealership in Madison forced to close took an estimated $2 million in tax revenue and over 100 jobs out of our local economy. Note, our Risk Management Learning Center home office is in Dane County 15 miles south of Madison and roughly 30 miles north of Janesville. The negative impact of the Government take over of GM has been devastating for many GM dealerships across Wisconsin. One example: Madison's generations old Thorsted Chevrolet was forced out of business taking with it over 100 jobs and roughly two million dollars in tax revenue. Oh yes! That came after they suffered through the bogus "Cash-for-Clunkers" program that cost taxpayers millions to recycle perfectly good vehicles only to drive families deeper in debt for replacement vehicles they didn't need and for the most part didn't want .

It's time for taxpayers to stand-up for Scott Walker

Click here for a pdf copy to circulate.

It's time we stop shooting ourselves in the foot!

Click our picture and meet Ron and Kay Rovoli!

It's time taxpayers take a stand against those attempting to recall Scott Walker. According to the Wisconsin Legislative Fiscal Bureau, Scott Walker and Act 10 in Door County alone has saved the Gibraltar School District $269,900, Sevastopol $199,800, Southern Door $406,200, and Sturgeon Bay $1,172,000 while no teachers have lost their jobs and those electing to retire early did so with what most in the private sector consider a "golden parachute."

No one can deny we taxpayers have emptied our wallets to support our schools. In 2011, I wrote Wisconsin property tax checks totaling $22,088.30, which included $7,574.68 in school taxes plus another $2,774.25 for vocational schools. That means roughly 1/2 of my property taxes go to support our schools. Remember, school tax levies increased on average $162 million each of the past five years.

Now the "Recall Walker" Democrats are asking taxpayers to pick up another unfunded $750,000 bill from the Wisconsin Government Accountability Board and in Door County alone an estimated unbudgeted $20,000 to fund the recall at the county level plus the bills that will be submitted by our 14 towns, 4 villages, and the City of Sturgeon Bay. And then taxpayers will have to pick up an estimated $17,500 unfunded bill at the county level for the primary and another $17,500 unfunded bill for the recall election plus the bills submitted each time by our 19 municipalities. In case you've lost count, the Democrat driven recall alone will cost Door County taxpayers an estimated $55,000 plus the aggravations of another campaign. Just think of the jobs we could create if we’d use all this wasted tax revenue to “buy local.” FYI: it’s estimated the recall at the State level will cost over $9 million not to mention campaign expenses for both parties.

It's time the far left stops complaining that "Walker's in the pocket of the Koch brothers." FYI: The Koch brothers own the largest, most successful job creating, privately owned, companies in the country and have given 88% of their political contributions nationwide to Republicans, 10% to Democrats and 2% to Independents. Why? Because they know Scott Walker and the Republicans are on track to get our economic house in order while attracting new employers to Wisconsin. Note the move of companies from Illinois north to Wisconsin.

Taxpayers are also tired of attorneys who are calling for Walker's recall because they disapprove of his efforts to curb frivolous law suits and cap excessive settlements that are driving healthcare and medical liability premiums through the roof and doctors out of business. Remember, the laws recently signed by Walker curbing third party and product liability settlements where passed by both parties in both houses.

Now voters are confronted by what even the liberal press has dubbed "One of the most questionable recall strategies in the history of our State." Petitioners brag of signing multiple petitions, copying names from phone books and headstones, and signing Donald and Daffy Duck along with Hitler to recall petitions, knowing the GAB admits they'll not vet signatures in any meaningful way. While it's the Democrats right to recall, it's not their right to void my vote half way through an election cycle. That’s akin to shooting my horse half way through a race he’s about to win.

You need only visit www.reforms.wi.gov or www.itsworkingwisconsin.com to appreciate the benefits taxpayers have already experienced having Scott Walker in office. As one of my more liberal Democrat friends said, "Recalling Scott Walker is like shooting ourselves in the foot.”

We’re all in this together. Before you discount my opinions, please know I voted for Kennedy and L.B.J., marched in protests with Russ Feingold, was an O.P.I.E.U.#39 (Organization of Professional International Employee Union) member for most of my career, own three Wisconsin businesses, have organized financial cooperatives/credit unions across the U.S., was a WEA member, and have taught business development courses for over 40 years. I'm convinced that those who support the recall of Scott Walker are at best misguided and at worse totally ignoring our dairy State is broke and taxpayers have been milked dry.

We've gotten many "thumbs up" for my "stop the recall" bumper stickers. While we may not be able to match the millions spent to void our votes, or stop those who think it's ethical to sign multiple petitions or copy names and addresses from phone books, we can make public those who've condoned such recall strategies.

I encourage everyone to help verify petition signatures and addresses. Software has been developed so we can enter signatures into a searchable data base that can be compared to public records such as court, school, death, and tax records. At a minimum we can identify convicted felons and those under age who've signed petitions.

Go to www.wisconsingrandsonsofliberty.com to learn more!

Before you void your neighbors  vote go to www.DoorCountyVeterans.com and meet five who died  so all our votes would count!

It's been my experience that many collecting signatures want you to sign without knowing the facts and will avoid any substantive discussion of the issues. Expect them to put you on the defensive with comments like: "I'll bet you watch FOX news" and "Walker's going to get rid of Social Security and Medicare" and "Walker's in the pockets of the large corporations." They like to mention Koch Industries and donations made by the Koch brothers as an example. The Koch brothers have given 88% of their political donations to the Republican party, 10% to the Democrats with conservative agendas, and 1% to independents. In my opinion, that means that the largest and most successful job creators in the country feels the Republicans are heading in the right direction. Click here to learn more.

Be honest and admit you listen to FOX News as well as others and agree with the need for need for campaign financing. Point out the impact unions have had on campaign and recall financing. Ask open ended questions to get them to talk and take time to listen and learn. Open ended questions begin with Who, What, Where, When, and How. They'll soon exhaust their crib notes and run for cover. Remember, we all share their valid fear of unemployment, losing benefits, and paying higher premiums. We're all in this boat together! It's no one person or party's fault, nor does any one person or party have all the right answers. Let's all agree that we dully elect our representatives and than give winners a reasonable chance to succeed or fail. Those who succeed get reelected and those who don't learn from their mistakes. Read my paper on "Managing the Speculative Risks of Politics. We're all human enough to fail, wise enough to alter our course, and strong enough to recover after the next election. Please visit  www.reform.wi.gov and www.itsworkingwisconsin.com, read "My letter from Santa 2011" and consider my comments on "Why I think recalling Scott Walker is like shooting yourself in the foot."

When we listen to the "other" side we uncover much common ground. For example, I met Martha collecting signatures in Sister Bay. We share an anger over wall street greed and a frustration with "for profit" banks. I agreed to listen to videos she advocated and she agreed to read my paper on why financial cooperatives such as credit unions are better positioned than banks to combat the greed on Wall Street. I posted a link for Martha and her Democrat colligues at www.RMLearningCenter.com.

A Christmas from Santa - 2011:

It won't be long and I'll be making my rounds. I'm pleased to report there's a "Christmas" trees back in the Governor's mansion, most wish lists falls within my budget, Mrs. Clause and I are in good health, Wisconsin's heading in the right direction, and while you all know there's a Santa, most of you know there's no free lunch and all honest work is honorable. Unfortunately, some of you still believe you deserve whatever you want no matter how deep you drive Santa into debt. Some of you are convinced life is unfair, and you have the right to void the vote of anyone with whom you disagree. Don't get me wrong! you're not all bad! Many of you deserve what you get, you realize life can be unfair, and only in extreme circumstances should you attempt to void your neighbor's vote.

It's time to forgive Grandpa ... for welding your school's backstop, replacing the light bulb in the gym, and driving your buddy to the library. He didn't realize he was violating the school's union contract. Tell grandpa he'll now be able to volunteer his time to save your school money without creating a fuss, starting a protest, or causing a strike. And, forgive your uncle for his anger over the new laws to curb frivolous law suites and exurbanite settlements. When he realizes these laws were fashioned after Worker's Compensation laws written by unions in the 1930's he'll understand. And forgive your aunt's anger over the efforts to stop taxpayer funded abortions through Planned Parenthood or the promotion of non-Christian conduct through PBS. She knows she should be supporting these efforts.

A final word of wisdom from Santa: Always remember, "When a government is big enough to give you everything you want, it's big enough to take away everything you have!

GOD BLESS YOU ALL!  Now help Santa handout some of Uncle Rich's stickers so we can save Wisconsin over $650,000 in recall expenses, not to mention the estimated $10 million dollars it'll take to run the recall election.
Remember: your great-great grandpa demanded "No taxation without representation," your great grandpa fought for your right to vote for your Representative of choice, your grandpa fought hard to preserve your right to vote, and your father fought hard so you'd be safe and secure. Santa needs you to always think for yourself, standup for what you believe, play fair, and have the courage to defend your vote, your family, and your freedom.

Action Steps:

  1. Go to www.reform.wi.gov and www.itsworkingwisconsin.com and learn how much money your school district saved and why we're heading in the right direction.
  2. Read on and relax! know you're wiser then when you woke and you're on the right side when it comes to getting your country out of debt and creating jobs within your community.

Risks you're taking when you sign a recall petition include:

  • Your name and address will become part of the public record.
  • Your name can and will be used to solicit donations.
  • You lose control over who'll see, copy, or use your signature.
  • You've signed a legal document authorizing your name to be used as those collecting signatures see fit.
  • Once you sign it'll be difficult to withdraw your name.
  • When you sign you might be selling your future down the drain.
  • Wisconsin is broke. Prior Governors from both parties have kicked the can down the road. Scott Walker is getting us out of debt and regaining our control over our future.
  • Please, don't shoot yourself in the foot.  Read on....

Why recalling Scott Walker is like shooting yourself in the foot!

Note: If you've already shot yourself in the foot, email your county clerk and ask for your name to be removed!

$650,000 is what it's going to cost Wisconsin taxpayers to recall a Governor who has just begun to get our economic house in order. I only ask my friends and family to learn the facts before thy place their family name on any recall. We have many veterans on our family tree who've fought for our right to vote. It frustrates me to see some attempting to void my vote in the last election because they fear allowing capitalism to work. The election cycle is set to not only allow candidates time to learn the ropes, but equally important the time needed to test their good faith efforts to succeed.  Please consider the following before voiding any ones vote during the last election:

In Door County's school districts alone we've seen the following benefits:

Now that teachers have the right not to join their union most have not! Some of the most liberal teacher's unions in Wisconsin have failed to recertify because over 51% of their potential membership choose to adopt their own work ethic and vote their own conscience. Go to my Risk Management Learning Center at www.RMLearningCenter.com and note the impact UW professors have had on my life and international RM projects. I'm a proud charter member of the UW Risk Management Alumni Association and former member of the Wisconsin Educators Association (WEA).

Go to www.reforms.wi.gov and consider the savings in your county. Then check out www.itsworkingwisconsin.com or talk to your employer's Chief Financial Officer (CFO).

My personal perspective on recalls and collective bargaining:

It's no secret I was a... liberal Democrat during the 60's, willing to march arm and arm with Russ Feingold and Paul Soglin, co-host "Across-the-Grain with Gene Carey" a radio talk-show confronting Madison's Bourgeoisie, and protest everything L.B.J. and Jane Fonda did to lose the war in Vietnam.

But than I... served an extended tour in Vietnam and realized how valuable it is to vote for the candidate of your choice. I than worked 30 years in corporate America; 23 of which I was a reluctant union member. I say "reluctant" because I was forced to watch unions collectively bargain the automobile industry out of Wisconsin, the steel industry out of Michigan, much of the World Credit Union Movement headquarters out of Madison, while staying politically quiet watching Democrats force feed taxpayers deeper in debt funding social welfare fraud and crazy ideas like light-rail between Madison and Milwaukee. I slowly grew sick and tied of friends who were prison guards bragging about converting their 90 sick days into 90 days of double time simply by calling in sick for the first shift than working the second to receive double their wages per their union contract. Using the "buddy system" they bragged of playing an extra 90 days a year and then taking home an extra 90 days of income. Teachers retiring out in their early 50's with full medical benefits for life and forcing me to pay salaries based on tenure and seniority rather than merit also made me mad.

I'm now retired and... free to think for myself, free to vote for whom I choose, and proud to carry for now a Republican Party membership cards. I've learned that neither Republicans nor Democrats have all the right answers but working together they can, if they choose, solve our State and national debt crisis to get our economic house in order. To give every taxpaying voter an equal voice, we need to give everyone their "full" time at bat, the chance to take their best shots, score what runs they can, or strike out and be replace during the next election. No Republican, Democrat, or Independent should be pulled from the game before they've had their chance to succeed or fail. We should all be fundamentally against all recalls! At a minimum we should all be fully aware of why we're considering signing recall petitions let alone criticizing those giving it their best shot at bat.

I'm asking everyone to STOP the Scott Walker recall efforts going on in Wisconsin. At a minimum, before anyone signs a recall petition, they should go to www.itsworkingwisconsin.com and www.reforms.wi.gov to learn how school districts are now hiring more teachers and increasing the salaries of those most qualified to teach. Also, everyone should listen to all news agencies to get a balanced view of how municipalities have reduced outstanding debts and are now more able to invest in new technology rather than being bogged down by interest payments that only kick their debts down the road to future generations.

My experience on both ends of the political spectrum has... driven me first to the far right and then just right of the political center. It was years under the autocrat dictates of the union hierarchy that almost destroyed my independent spirit and willingness to fight for my right to vote for who I believed deserved a chance at bat.

I apologize to... those Walker recall workers in Stoughton, Madison, Green Bay, Sturgeon Bay, Fish Creek, and Sister Bay whom I might have offended with my less then sensitive comments about your willingness to ignore the facts. As promised, I'll try to be more civil the next time our paths cross. I guess the death threats made against Scott Walker, Robert Cowels, and other Republicans during recent recalls along with booing during the national anthem, the shouting down of 12 year old speakers during counter-demonstrations, and the property destruction at our State Capitol has taken its toll.

Free Bumper Stickers and homemade handouts:

For those who are looking for a more civil way to confront those collecting signatures you can click here for pocket stickers to hand to those waiting to sign petitions and click here for bumper stickers similar to those I've placed on my cars and trucks. Make you're own and attach them with clear packaging tape. Click here for a sample of one I thought-up this morning. Be creative and be civil. I have many, many good friends on both sides of this political fence. I guarantee you, many of those now on the other side are there because they either have no choice or they've not been told all the facts. I've been there. It's uncomfortable and embarrassing.

One final request of small business leaders. Please consider how the private sector through Humana has reduced healthcare costs while increasing benefits for our Medicare seniors over 65. It's a heck of a lot better than living with the expected requirement to provide health insurance for all employees. If you consider how OSHA requirements have been dictated via regulations, every employer with more than 5 employees should be voting for anyone willing to put a fork in Obama Care.

A Risk Management Perspective on our economy and unions - 1968 through 2011

The economic hole we're in comes from decades of borrowing in an effort to support a gradual shift from staunch Capitalism to a California version of Socialism. Spend some time on Madison's Isthmus if you think I'm wrong. You need only watch a few episodes of Judge Judy to realize there are those who see nothing wrong with raising children on taxpayer funded welfare rather than getting a job and working to make ends meet. To those who blame the government, I say "We are the government." To those who blame banks, I say, join a credit union. Credit unions are member owned and controlled, not for profit financial cooperatives that for the most part have resisted violating lending common sense. Yet, in the late 70's and early 80's some chose to ignore the traditionally conservative three "Cs" of lending and dug such a deep economic hole they folded the Rohde Island Share Deposit Insurance Corporation (RISDIC).

In the 70's we demanded and got "Equal Rights" legislation forcing financials to consider the potential credit worthiness of both the husband and wife when evaluating home loans. Consequently, home values often doubled overnight. No one selling their home was dumb enough to take $50,000 for their home when they learned the borrower could be approved for $100,000. The problem was,  Mom and Dad woke up the next day realizing they both had to find a job in order to service their loan. To add insult to injury, the law allowed for lenders to offer home equity loans to borrowers so many immediately took their down payment equity in the home as a collateralized loan just digging themselves deeper in debt.

All in all, like it or not, it's the less educated loan applicants who finds themselves quickly "under water" and facing foreclosure. This same stupidity occurred during the "Cash for Clunkers" program. Those who didn't need better transportation were convinced to go deeper in debt for a car they really didn't need.

Oh yes! Then there is Fanny Mai and Freddy the taxpayers can guarantee your stupidly Mack. It said, "Don't worry banks, just give them the money. We'll cover your lack of due diligence.

Yes the government deserves much of the blame. But again, we are the government. At some point we have to return to our American work ethic, understand there is no free lunch, pick up a shovel and dig ourselves out of debt. We dogged the bullet in Wisconsin when we had the sense to put a fork in the light rail that studies showed we didn't need and no one would ride. Thank God Scott Walker won the last election or we'd be even deeper in debt.

Yes, unions have collectively bargained employers out of Wisconsin... let alone out of the steel, automobile, airline, and other international markets. But without their ability to collectively bargain or strike... we'd not have government watch dogs like The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) let alone the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). Equally important, unions helped drive the development of Worker's Compensation laws that ensure workers receive proper medical attention for injuries suffered while on the job. Wisconsin was the first state to enact WC legislation and continues to play an important role to ensure safe and healthy work conditions across the country. The benefits unions bring to the private sector.. and the jobsite are not in question. Union training programs help ensure... employees hit the ground running and perform to the highest standards. Unions, by coordinating jobsites and scheduling work ensure steady employment for their members and limited downtime for employers. The question is not... whether unions have played an important role in our economy. The question is,... "At what point does collective bargaining and the threat of strikes drive companies out of business and jobs overseas. The millions of union dues being spent in Wisconsin to void or last election are obscene. The fact that there are still uninformed electorate who are willing to foot the bill is frightening.

Wisconsin teachers told us they think of their union... when they failed to get over 51% of their represented teachers to join the union, which in turn decertified their union. Teachers, at least in Wisconsin realize that internet learning and home schooling is fast replacing the need for brick and mortar class rooms. They understand class size in no longer a relevant argument nor is how long they should have to teach during the day and year. They realize they're no longer only competing with teachers in their district, they're compete with teachers overseas who are using social media (Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter, etc.) and cell phones to teach and guide the world not just one generation. Sadly, well maybe not so sadly,... the anti Walker ads that bemoan the loss of their athletic coach and the need for kids to sit on the floor in one classroom, speak volumes of how disparate some union leaders are to shelter their members from reality. Unfortunately, union outside Wisconsin have... invested so much money to recall Walker I fear they just might convince enough taxpayers to spend another $650,000 to shoot themselves in the foot.

Now back to my retirement!
